Information
Inspired by the power of love stories, Melanie Lane’s bold new work Love Lock deconstructs love songs to create movement that celebrates the fantasies and realities of love.
With striking costumes by the iconic designer Akira Isogawa and a score by UK electronic artist Clark, Love Lock imagines a fantastical folk dance of the future, a dance that summons a collective energy and that dreams into the complex and often giddy realms of love.
Melanie Lane’s Love Lock is generously supported by Sydney Dance Company’s Visionary Patron Brett Clegg and the Clegg Foundation.

Cheat Sheet
Melanie is an Australian/Javanese choreographer and performer. She has collaborated with artists from film, visual art, theatre and music, creating works that tread between performative forms and contexts. Her independent work has been presented at international festivals and theatres in Europe. USA, Indonesia and Australia.
Melanie's practice interrogates physical and cultural histories to explore current social mythologies and extrapolates these into surreal futures that are confounded, broken and reconfigured.
As a choreographer, Melanie has established a repertory of works performing in international festivals and theatres such as Tanz im August, Uzes Danse Festival, Arts House Melbourne, Sydney Opera House, O Espaco do Tempo, Festival Antigel, Dance Massive, Carriageworks, Chunky Move and HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin among others. She has been artist in residence at Dock 11 Berlin, Tanzwerkstatt Berlin, Lucy Guerin Studios, Arts House Melbourne and Schauspielhaus Leipzig.
The Love Lock score is written by British composer, producer and performer, Clark.
At times featuring a dense collage of recorded percussion, cello, synthesisers, voice and flute, the score follows the choreography into an ecstatic high.
"I burrowed into a kind of controlled mania, exploring unusual microtonal shifts with what I hear as hooky ear worms, twists and turns." - Clark
Featuring Costume Design by the celebrated Akira Isogawa and Lighting Design by longtime collaborator Damien Cooper, Love Lock inhabits a jewel-toned, ever-evolving world.
At points, the lighting rig stretches from ceiling to floor, delineating pockets of space between the dancers and their "techno-futurist fantasy" (Dance Australia) environment.
Each dancer dons a costume designed individually for them in a myriad of colours, textures and shapes, creating "vibrant haute couture glamour" (Sydney Morning Herald.
