“Sexy, athletic choreography…” TimeOut Sydney

Rafael Bonachela’s acclaimed work Ocho makes a welcome return to the stage as the first part of the evening. Featuring a driving score by Nick Wales, with the haunting vocals of Aboriginal artist Rrawun Maymuru and powerful set design by David Fleischer, Ocho won rave reviews from audiences and critics alike when it premiered in 2017. Set in a glass room, eight dancers search for salvation and connection, finding a salve for the troubles of the world.

The second half of the program delivers two world premieres. Featuring the evocative score Cicadidae by Australian composer Kate Moore recorded by the Australian String QuartetSummer by Rafael Bonachela captures the lightness of a world turning over a new leaf.  The aural backdrop is the quintessential sound of summer and with costumes by the unmistakable masters of colour, Romance was Born and Stephanie Lake is always a treat and Sydney Dance Company is thrilled to commission this important Australian dance artist to create a world premiere for the third piece in the Resound program.

Lake’s new creation, The Universe is Here, fuses movement and music, bringing blistering light to the stage and a fizzing glimpse of a haunted dreamscape. Poetic, fresh and forceful, her new work will feature incredible collaborators including costume design by Harriet Oxley and music composed by Robin Fox with live music performed by Harpist, Emily Granger. This is intricate and dynamic dance that hits you in the solar plexus.

Resound

“★★★★ As ever with the Sydney Dance Company under the artistic direction of Rafael Bonachela, the dancers are superb. The skill they bring to the shaping of their bodies is equalled by the speed with which they ring the changes from one phrase to the next.” Sydney Morning Herald

“A three-course carte du jour.” Sydney Arts Guide

“… a beautiful and original show, I’m truly blown away with all the dancers and their individuality just oozing out…” Audience Member

“Sydney Dance Company’s Resound is a challenging, thought-provoking triple bill that showcases the superlative dancing of the Sydney Dance Company dancers…” Dance Informa

Ocho

“★★★★ Bonachela has done Sydney Dance Company proud with this thrilling, visceral piece, exploiting every inch of his precise, virtuosic dancers. I can’t think of a better introduction to his abstract yet dramatically conceived world than Ocho, an intensely theatrical work that cries out to be seen by dance lovers and anyone interested in the way movement can tell stories in modern society.” Limelight

“★★★★ It was physical, aggressive, but exhilarating…” The Music

“Sexy, athletic choreography…” Time Out Sydney

Summer

★★★★ “Spirit-lifting… it’s a corker.”  Limelight

“…a kaleidoscope of colour, warmth and closeness, intoxicatingly shared.”  Limelight

The Universe is Here

★★★★ “… a magical ending that speaks of a measure of harmony and faith in humanity. The harp’s reputation as a serious instrument of beauty is restored as Scales and Luke Hayward revisit movement from earlier solos. Anguish is soothed by the music and hands connect. No matter how fragile, before they were alone and now they are together.”  Limelight

“A golden offering of synergic precision, choreographic ingenuity, and verve.”  Sydney Arts Guide

[The Universe is Here] “manifests Lake’s interwoven motifs of enigmas and differences, artistry and melancholy.” Dance Informa

Duration

First performed

2017

Explosive and powerful, Ocho, is "sexy, athletic choreography…" (Time Out Sydney), showcasing the dancers' virtuosity. Fusing a brutalist industrial dreamscape with a surging electronic score by Nick Wales that features haunting vocals by Aboriginal singer Rrawun Maymuru of the Mangalili clan, Ocho explores the infinite connections that exist between us all.
