Rachel Arianne Ogle
Rachel Arianne Ogle is a dance artist with an extensive career spanning 14 years. Rachel’s investments in dance as a contemporary art form are deep and multi-faceted, encompassing artistic roles in company and independent dance, international residencies and exchange projects, tertiary lecturing, and a dedication to long-term projects within disability arts and remote communities.
A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Rachel has performed nationally and internationally with a range of Australian companies including Melbourne’s Phillip Adams’ BalletLab, Perth’s Hydra Poesis, Buzz Dance Theatre, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, and pvi collective; with companies in Hong Kong, Europe and Africa, and with a range of independent dance artists nationally and internationally; including Australia’s Sete Tele, Paea Leach, Jo Pollitt, Paul Selwyn Norton, Aimee Smith, Kynan Hughes and Olivia Millard; and Berlin based Cuban choreographer Judith Sanchez Ruiz.
Rachel has studied extensively with renowned international dance artist David Zambrano, participating in his ’50 Days in Costa Rica’ project in 2010. This resulted in the formation of the global group, 50collective, with whom she has performed in San Jose, Costa Rica; Maribor, Slovenia; Bari, Italy; and New York City.
In 2009 she was the inaugural recipient of the Future Moves ‘Mid-Career Contemporary Dance Fellowship’; and undertook an artistic residency at Atelier RE-AL in Lisbon, Portugal with Sete Tele, under the mentorship of Joao Fiadiero. In 2005 Rachel was the Australian recipient of a danceWEB scholarship, at Impulstanz in Vienna.
Rachel has been commissioned to create work for Proximity Festival, Link Dance Company, WAAPA, Nat Cursio Company, STRUT Dance, STEPS Youth Dance Company and Perth Fashion Festival. Her choreographic work has been presented in Australia, France, Netherlands and Nigeria. In 2014 she premiered her independently produced full-length work precipice to critical acclaim.
Alongside her performance and choreographic work, Rachel has an extensive history of facilitating numerous community dance residency projects throughout regional and remote communities in Australia, including Warralong, Strelley, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Jigalong, Mutitjulu, Fitzroy Crossing and Bayulu; and intensive Artist in Residencies in Alice Springs, Karratha, Mandurah and Kojonup; and in Christmas Island. She has worked extensively with dancers with various physical and intellectual disabilities. In 2009 Rachel received, along with Sete Tele, the Western Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Regional or Community Dance for their work in these areas.
Rachel is a current sessional lecturer in Dance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). In 2015 Rachel was nominated for a Helpmann Award for ‘Best Dance Work’; and shortlisted for an Australian Dance Award in the category of ‘Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance’ – both nominations for her work precipice .
In 2016 Rachel is an Asialink Resident at Maya Dance Theatre in Singapore; and the recipient of an Australia Council International Residency at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Centre (EMPAC) at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, for the final stage development of her dance and installation work i have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night , in collaboration with esteemed design team Benjamin Cisterne and Luke Smiles.
Most recently, Rachel is a commissioned choreographer for Sydney Dance Company, for our New Breed season in December 2016.
