Ned Beckley

Composer, New Breed 2016
Biography

Ned Beckley is an artist who constantly pushes himself outside of his comfort zone and expresses himself most articulately via his music. As a result, his work is always keenly felt, and always feels imperative. Beckley’s music is ruminative and emotional, shape-shifting physical power with immersive melody, concentrated minimalism with absorbing aesthetics.

A self-taught composer and sound designer, Beckley has composed and recorded soundtracks for all mediums. He takes a unique DIY approach, and his expertise encompasses a plethora of styles that are never bound to any preconceived notions of how music should sound.

His work has been involved with advertising and digital agencies, television networks, TV, radio and film production companies, dance and theatre, game and app developers, record labels and artists in Australia and around the world. Some of these have included The Australian Ballet, Netflix, Sony, Google, ABC and Warner Music. His past and current work has also involved playing live alongside touring acts such as Jon Hopkins, Andy Stott, Colin Stetson and Lapalux under the electronic alias LOWER SPECTRUM.

Constructing complex compositions with multi-layered textures and aural depth, Beckley manages to maintain the philosophy that less is more. He has studied cinema at Melbourne University and worked at the National Film and Sound Archive, both of which have served to hone Beckley’s understanding of the synergy between film and sound.

Ned lives and works between Fremantle and Melbourne.
