Matthew Marshall
Matthew Marshall (WAAPA 2000), is in demand for his lighting designs for theatre, opera, events and dance. His passion and prolificacy as a lighting designer has been showcased most recently on 8 Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography (Griffin), The Winter’s Tale (Bell Shakespeare), Band of Magicians (Sydney Festival), Oedipus Schmoedipus (Belvoir/Sydney Festival), The 2013 Wharf Revue (STC), Cinderella (Opera Queensland), Day One, A Hotel, Evening (Black Swan State Theatre Company), Forget Me Not (Belvoir) and This Is Our Youth starring film star Michael Cera (Sydney Opera House Presents).
Matthew’s designs for dance include Gudirr Gudirr (Marrugeku), The Language of Living (New Zealand Dance Company), Slow Dances for Fast Times for Martin Del Amo (Carriageworks/Performing Lines) and Trocadero Dance Palace (Sydney Festival).
Matt has worked closely with Director Craig Ilott on the Ivy’s award winning Pacha, as well as the huge smash hit Smoke & Mirrors (Sydney Festival/Spiegeltent International). Scooping 3 Helpmann Awards, Smoke & Mirrors is the highest rating broadcast for Studio TV on Foxtel and earned Matt critical acclaim from the UK press for its season at the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2013 Matt received two Australian Production Design Guild Award (APDG) nominations (Lighting Design) for his work on Pacha and Slow Dances for Fast Times and he received a 2012 Helpmann Award nomination for Best Lighting Design on an adaptation of Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree (Barking Gecko/PIAF). Matt is also a mentor to Technical Production students at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA).
