Meet Sophie (aged 9) and her mum Natalie and hear why they love Sydney Dance Company’s School Holiday Workshops!

How long ago did you start dancing? 

Sophie: I started dancing two years ago when I was 7 through my school dance program. I really enjoyed the classes and it introduced me to my two favourite dance styles – hip hop, and jazz! I then decided to start doing classes outside of school as well. 

What do you love the most about dancing?

Sophie: I love that you can express your emotions and dance around expressing however you feel. 

What have you enjoyed about coming to dance classes at Sydney Dance Company?

Sophie: The spaces are all really beautiful, and every teacher has their own unique style and approach to dance. I’ve also met lots of really nice people and made lots of friends. 

What is your favourite dance style and why? 

Sophie: My favourite style is JFH because I get to experience a combination of three dance styles at once – jazz, funk and hip hop. I love that they’re all smooth dance styles and I love the music that comes with those styles. 

If you had some friends coming to do a workshop at Sydney Dance Company. What would you tell them?

Sophie: I tell them to absolutely come here because all the teachers are super nice, and all the other dancers are really lovely, and the studios are so big and spacious with enough room to run around and dance as much as they want to! 

Why did you choose a Sydney Dance Company workshop for your child?

Natalie: Over the years I’ve done a few of the casual adult dance classes here and through the monthly newsletter I heard about the school holiday workshops. Like lots of parents, we’re always looking for things to do during the holidays because I’m working parent. I’ve always had a great experience at Sydney Dance Company and even though there are professionals working here everyone is really nice and friendly and it’s just such a good environment. I know Sophie loves to dance and I thought she would definitely enjoy it, and after the first workshop she has asked me to come back every holiday. 

Would you recommend Sydney Dance Company’s School Holiday Workshop to other parents? 

Natalie: Yes I would, absolutely. There’s easy parking right out the front, and there are workshops for young people with experience as well as beginners. The most important thing is that my child always comes home happy!
