School Holiday Workshop – Sienna and Martin’s Experience

2024 has kicked off with our Summer School Holiday Workshops. Throughout this first week, we’ve chatted with a few participants and their parents about their experience here at Sydney Dance Company.

Sienna – 12-13 years 2-day Commercial Dance Course participant

When and how did you start dancing?

I started when I was about 3 or 4 and from the start, I loved it! I got started with all the styles, grew as a dancer, and tried different studios.

What do you love about dancing?

I like that I can express myself through movement in lots of different ways. For example, in ballet you can use control, in hip-hop you can be free, let loose and do whatever you want. I like that you can just be yourself.

What is special about coming to Sydney Dance Company?

Sydney Dance Company is amazing, there are a lot of different teachers who are so talented, and I love working with all of them. I enjoy all the different choreography that makes coming so fun. The teachers include every single person and all their abilities, so it is such a nice place to dance.

Can you tell us about one of your workshops today and what you liked about it?

I loved all of them, but I really enjoyed hip-hop. I got to learn something new, we learnt popping, gutting and waving, and I had not done that before. The teacher was really funny and made the class really fun and inclusive. I like that there are different people to meet and being in a new place to learn to dance.

What would you tell your friends about coming to Sydney Dance Company?

I would say, you have to come! This is an amazing place with wonderful people and teachers, you will learn so much!

Why did you choose a Sydney Dance Company workshop for Sienna?

I chose Sydney Dance Company because Sienna had never been, also because she has her sights set on joining the Youth Ensemble and so we thought, what better way to test the waters than with a couple of school holiday workshops.

What has Sienna learnt over the past few days?

Sienna has said that the workshops were really helpful to learn some new tips and tricks. She is not very experienced in hip-hop so she found that really helpful and also enjoyed musical theatre.

Would you recommend workshops to others and why?

I think it is definitely worth trying Sydney Dance Company whether it’s a holiday workshop or something else during the term. You can tell that the teachers and the workshops are as good as it gets!
