Member Spotlight: Kristy Attwells

published

30 April 2019

This month, we profile one of our talented Dance Class Members, Kristy Attwells.

Kristy is a regular attendee of our Hip Hop and JFH classes. She was also the winner of our March Member competition for attending the most number of classes in a month, winning a private class with Steph Thomas!

We spoke to her about what she loves about dance, her favourite teachers and the best piece of advice she’s been given in class:

Q. When and how did you start dancing?

I started dancing when I was two years old, doing Jazz and Tap. But I stopped dancing when I was in my twenties. My friend brought me along to Sydney Dance Company classes just over two years ago and I fell in love with it again.

Q. Why do you dance?

I dance because I enjoy it so much. I have met so many fun people and have found it’s a great way to exercise. I always walk away feeling happy and it reminds me how much I love to dance.

Q. What classes do you attend at Sydney Dance Company?

I attend a lot of different classes, but mainly I do Hip Hop and JFH, both Beginner and Intermediate.

Q. What do you enjoy most about classes at Sydney Dance Company?

I love the teachers and also how friendly the staff and students are who go there.

Q. What has been the most valuable advice given by your teacher in class?

I’ve been given a lot of valuable advice, however what stands out is how important it is to take the information given to you and pick your level. It’s not always about nailing the choreography but taking away new knowledge and being the best that you can be. Also, it’s important to recognise the value of practice and how the more you do things the better you can become.

Q. What has been the biggest challenge for you as a dancer?

I would say there are two big challenges: letting go and not caring what others might think and also dancing with a knee injury.

Q. What’s your favourite dance style and why?

I like both JFH and Hip Hop and couldn’t pick between the two. But Hip Hop definitely feels more familiar to me.

Q. Who are your favourite teachers?

I have so many favourite teachers for so many different reasons.

James Deane always teaches a fun class with great attitude. He taught the first class I did that made me fall back in love with dance again. His class is also so positive and I don’t know anyone who leaves his class without a smile on their face.

Michel Beirouthy is also a favourite of mine with the cool tracks he chooses. Steph Thomas is also amazing. Her musicality is insane and she’s always there to challenge us. I would love to be able to move in the way she does.

Melanie Louise is another favourite because she has so much knowledge and is always willing to support her students to gain a better understanding of how their body moves.

Q. What do you do outside of class?

Outside of class I am an early childhood teacher, looking after three and four year olds.
