Q: What is Brightness about, and how does it conclude your trilogy?

Kristina Chan: Brightness is the final piece in a trilogy exploring our relationship with nature, following A Faint Existence and MOUNTAIN. It examines new possibilities, transformation and growth, reflecting on the fragile new ideas that can bring hope in times of uncertainty. The work draws attention to the micro life-forces that support our existence, encouraging audiences to consider their own connection to the environment.

Q: How do the choreography and design elements reflect the themes of Brightness?

Kristina Chan: The choreography experiments with form, repetition and duration to reflect ecological timelines and transformations. The design elements are integral to this, with costumes by Donna Sgro that emphasise movement and change, and Clare Britton’s minimal set design highlighting tiny details in nature. Together, they create an integrated experience merging body and textiles to evoke a sense of impermanence and transformation.

Q: What has been your vision for this trilogy, and how has it evolved over time?

Kristina Chan: My vision has always been to create art that speaks to our relationship with nature, provoking audiences to experience, feel and observe ecological themes intimately. From A Faint Existence to MOUNTAIN and now Brightness, I’ve explored concepts of impermanence, mortality and transformation. This investigation has deepened my understanding of these themes, highlighting the potential for growth and renewal even in challenging times.

Q: How has your collaboration with Sydney Dance Company and other partners supported the creation of Brightness?

Kristina Chan: After moving regionally and having a child, supporting this work to be performed again is such a wonderful opportunity.  The resources and space needed to explore and experiment with new ideas are not always easily accessible for independent artists. To be able to once again bring this work to life and share it with Sydney audiences means a lot.
