Nelson Earl and Cass Mortimer Eipper are collaborating on Bell Jar for New Breed 2017. Here, Nelson provides an insight into his process.
1. Do you normally work with dancers? Tell us more about your experience
I haven’t formally created on an ensemble before. Instead I’ve had much more experience collaborating with other dancers. The collaborative process for New Breed has been fruitful. It has been a real learning curve.
2. What has been you career highlight so far?
Probably this, New Breed! I wouldn’t have thought I’d be granted with an opportunity like this, so early on in my life.
3. How would you describe your choreographic style?
My style has been described as being a mixture of fluid and grunge tones. I am yet to mature a perception of myself that I can articulate as clearly. I suppose with each choreographic process inspires within me a new vernacular or vocabulary specific to that process. So I would say that Bell Jar explores the graceless or gangling style of movement with a harsh edge.
4. What do you love most about contemporary dance?
I like it when I fall into MY own groove. This happens rarely.
