Overview
MEET THE NEW BREED OF AUSTRALIAN DANCE CREATORS
In 2014 Sydney Dance Company and Carriageworks presented the latest ‘New Breed’ of Australia’s most exciting and emerging choreographers. Showcasing a rich diversity of choreographic ideas, this incredibly talented quintet of choreographers created brand new pieces on members of Sydney Dance Company.
New Breed provides a unique opportunity for some of Sydney Dance Company’s dancers to step off stage and into the choreographic arena. Cass Mortimer Eipper’s Dogs and Baristas is inspired by the theme of portion-sized friendship, comically exploring the traces of affection generated by the small or limited interactions that keep us sane. Making their choreographic debuts, Charmene Yap’s Do We plays with music and movement while Juliette Barton’s work Scrutineer is a personal exploration into a dysmorphic state of mind and its potential to change.
Sydney Dance Company also welcomes two independent choreographers with very distinct styles. Lee Serle’s White Elephant is conceptually driven and constructs a surreal moving landscape inspired by the works of Australian painter Stephen Bush, while Gabrielle Nankivell’s new work Wildebeest is a high-energy tour de force of the dancers physicality.
Don’t miss this limited season of raw talent and fresh ideas at Carriageworks.
“The reason that I am here now, working in this position is because when I was a dancer, full-time for 12 years, I also had the curiosity and the desire to choreograph.” – Rafael Bonachela
