Q. When did you start dancing?
I’ve danced since the age of five. I’ve done Jazz, Tap, Contemporary and Ballet.
Q. Was there a particular moment when you fell in love with dance?
I started doing classes and I instantly fell in love with it.
Q. What goes through your mind when you’re dancing?
I feel a sense of freedom.
Q. What is your favourite style of dance?
I love doing Jazz and Hip-Hop because they are so upbeat. That’s sort of my thing.
Q. Do you enjoy Contemporary and Lyrical dance?
I like how it’s slow and calm. It would be my second favourite.
Q. Do you approach Contemporary and Lyrical dance differently to other styles of dance like Hip-Hop?
Yes. Because of the difference of speed between them.
Q. What have you learned so far in the Contemporary & Lyrical Extended workshop?
How to use space and to spread out. I’ve also learned new skills and techniques on how to do new moves.
Q. What are some of these skills that you’ve learned?
There’s a step we do in Lyrical called a helicopter spin. We go onto the ground and we do a turn. I didn’t do it very well the first time but now I’ve got it down quite well.
Q. What’s been the most enjoyable aspect of the course so far?
Meeting new friends and meeting some of the new choreographers because I’ve never had any of them before. Also, the atmosphere of everyone and the staff here are really kind.
Q. What would you say would be the most challenging aspect of the workshop?
The choreography because in Lyrical and Contemporary it’s can be quite fast. The teachers go over it really well. I’m just not very good at getting choreography down on the first go. I have to spend time on it.
Q. Is there a piece of advice a teacher has given you that has helped you in your dancing?
A lot of the teachers have said to me that I need to spread out. I always want to be at the back, but they want me to stay closer to the front and spread out so that I can dance bigger.
Q. What is it like having Company dancer Juliette Barton teach you in class?
She’s been really nice. She gives great corrections and she is really good at what she does. If I make a mistake or if anyone makes a mistake she gets on it right away and tells us what we have to do to fix it.
Q. Would you want to do another Sydney Dance Company workshop in the future?
Yes, I’d love to do more of these workshops. I really want to do it until I’m a bit older so that I can start doing the regular classes.
Q. Would you tell your friends about the workshops?
Yes, I definitely will!
